Member Tells How FreeScore Helped Get Her Life Back On Track
Interview with Patricia O'Leary of Massachusetts
"I had lost my husband and I kind of let things go. After five years I decided, OK, it's time to get my life back on track. I heard that your company was one of the most reputable, so that's the one I used. I found out that my credit score is kind of low, partly because I don't have any credit out there, and partly because there was an error on my report ... At this point, if it hadn't been for FreeScore making this as effortless as it has been, I probably wouldn't be as far along as I am in achieving my goal of excellent credit."
Why did you first go to FreeScore.com?
I had lost my husband and I kind of let things go. After five years I decided, OK, it's time to get my life back on track. I heard that your company was one of the most reputable, so that's the one I used.
What did you find out?
I found out that even though I am pretty much debt-free, my credit score is kind of low. Part of the reason is the fact that I don't have any credit out there.
Based on what you found, did you do anything to improve your credit score?
Yes. Based on what I discovered at FreeScore.com, I've taken steps now to improve my credit scores and hopefully I'll get them up to where they should be so I have excellent credit again. One thing I did is take out a small loan to show I can reliably make loan payments.
How did you know what to do to improve your score?
You get the written report and they kind of advise you what to do.
Were there any errors or surprises on your credit report?
Yes! A tax lien related to a business I once owned dating back to 1993 was on there, even though the tax lien was released in 1998!
What did you do?
According to the FreeScore Credit Report Expiration Guide, tax liens are harmful and can stay on one's credit report indefinitely. However, once paid, the record will remain on the report for seven years from the payment date. I had retained copies of those tax liens proving the tax amount had been satisfied and a release had been issued in 1998. I have written to TransUnion and sent copies of the tax release to them and have asked them to please update their records.
What about Equifax and Experian?
This issue appears on my TransUnion report, but does not appear on Experian or Equifax.
You might be interested to know that it is very common for the three different credit bureaus to have very different information about you.
Really? That's very interesting.
Have you seen an improvement in your credit scores?
I did not anticipate my scores would improve overnight. My plan is to focus on my stepping stone theory. By obtaining my credit report from FreeScore, I have set the foundation.
Do you expect to see your credit score improve soon?
My goal is to see a significant improvement within six months and an even greater improvement by this time next year. I don't think this is an unobtainable goal. By using FreeScore as a tool for monitoring my report, and keeping me updated on any monthly changes, my efforts will show positive results.
We are sure it will! Do you find FreeScore.com easy to use?
It is very easy-to-follow and step-by-step. They explain, OK, go to the next screen. The screen is done very carefully and they give prompts. FreeScore has also taken great measure in privacy and security.
What else do you like about FreeScore.com?
It is quick at the same time. It's not like you sit there and wait for 20 minutes or anything like that. It is a very seamless procedure.
Have you received any email alerts from the FreeScore monitoring service?
Yes. It was kind of a good feeling to know that … well, you hear about all these things out there with the people stealing your identity and whatnot … so it's a good feeling now. I have a little more of a comfort zone, or comfort feeling, that they let me know that someone has looked into my credit history.
Who looked into your credit report?
I am moving and the landlord said he was going to run my credit. I was notified that he did it and I liked that. I liked knowing what's going on.
Overall, how would you describe your experience with FreeScore?
At this point, if it hadn't been for FreeScore making this as effortless as it has been, I probably wouldn't be as far along as I am in achieving my goal of excellent credit.
Thank you, Patricia. We wish you well in your goal, and we're pleased that we are helping you achieve it.
